The MESSY Event – was, well, MESSY!
The Youth started the major changes in the Youth Room at our July gathering – The MESSY Event. Please pardon our mess for a while we recreate the space. We are painting, changing the furniture, decorating and creating a game space.
After our hard work, we cooled off outside with some more MESSY fun!

Regular Wednesday Youth Group – Kickoff Wednesday, September 11th
That time is almost upon us – summer coming to an end; cooler weather; shorter days. Though I am not looking forward to those things, I am looking forward to kicking off Youth Group for my second Fall at First UMC. We will begin with a Kickoff Event Wednesday, September 11th at 6:00 pm.
With the return of regular Wednesday Youth Group, comes the return of Wednesday evening meals. I greatly appreciate all of the contributions and support offered by the First UMC community last year to make a meal each week possible.
Feeding the Future Church
The meals are an important part of our time together on Wednesday because, well, hungry kids are crabby kids! But sincerely, many of our youth travel directly from after school activities to the church for Youth Group and it’s so meaningful to offer a meal before leading into our group time. Also, as a stressed-out parent that obviously participates in programming on Wednesday nights, it is such a gift to not have to worry about cooking a meal for my family, throwing it down everyone’s throats, rushing out the door to get the church on time, and lastly cleaning up the mess after returning home late that night. But, did you know that meals are open to everyone, not just those participating in Wednesday evening programming? Please join us sometime!
I believe the more people we pack the church with on Wednesday nights the more meaningful our community time is together. The more opportunity we have to love and fellowship with one another.
To sign up to sponsor or host a Fall Wednesday evening meal please use this Sign-Up Genius (http://bit.ly/WedMeal ) or email Amanda directly. Thank you all for your contributions and support of the Youth and Quest Programs at First UMC and for feeding tomorrow’s church leaders.
During the school year, grades 7th - 12th grade meet weekly on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm in the Youth Room, following an optional meal at 6:00 pm. We create a safe, welcoming, and fun space for youth to fellowship, make meaningful connections, and grow closer to God. For more information about Youth Group, please fill out the Youth Group Registration Form. Contact Amanda Hodge, Director of Youth Ministry, any time with questions and/or prayer requests.
First Artists Collective (FAC)
The First Artist Collective (a subgroup of Youth Group) is a group of musicians, poets, and artists exploring and deepening our faith through shared artistic expression. We find energy and inspiration in the diverse beauty of God’s creation and in fellowship with one another. We recognize the gifts and talents in our community and welcome those who have not yet found a creative home. We practice our collective art as an offering, actively supporting one another through the fruits of the Spirit and working together to create works of art that honor God and strengthen our community.
About Amanda, Director of Youth Ministry:
Amanda Hodge joined us in September to lead our Youth Ministry into the future by engaging current and new students to connect with God in Jesus Christ. As a church that puts love first in everything we do, living into our mission of inviting, forming, and sending active followers of Jesus, we needed someone who also puts God’s love as the primary guiding principle in her life, and we found her!
Amanda Hodge was born on Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. After her father retired from the military and relocated the family to North Carolina, Amanda was introduced to church by being invited to be a part of a local youth group. Ever since that time, she has been passionate about helping Youth Ministries lead others down the same path that has enriched her own life.
Amanda has led a variety of Youth Ministries at churches in North Carolina and Michigan, as well as on campus during her undergraduate studies at Chowan University. Amanda has many other skills and gifts that she brings to the role, including a degree in Business Administration and, most recently, event planning experience at the University of Denver in Colorado. Amanda is delighted to bring all of these talents, as well as her passion for serving youth, to First United Methodist Church.
